Building New Scholarly Networks Around Engineering Culture, Diversity, and Gender

The teaching team, including Shannon Gilmartin (Adjunct Professor of Mechanical Engineering and a Sr. Research Scholar at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research) and Carol Muller (Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering and Executive Director of WISE Ventures), set out to help engineers understand diversity and people. An engineer may miss out on an opportunity do great work if they mistakenly assume all people will respond the way they do to a product or service. A pilot course was launched and, with the support of VPTL's Faculty College Program, the team was expanded to bring in Engineering, Social Science and Education expertise, and allowed faculty to carve out time to work to continue to improve the course.
