Practices & Principles of Effective Teaching

Put Research-based Strategies Into Action

This mini-course provides learners with a basic knowledge of the relevant research in cognitive psychology and science education and the ability to apply that knowledge to enhance their ability to learn and teach science, particularly at the undergraduate level.

The topics are explored in six sessions using readings, discussion, and application of the ideas through creation or revision of learning activities.

  • Create effective educational activities guided by the five principles that learning research has shown are critical for good design
  • Carry out good assessment of student learning and provide feedback that best enhances student learning
  • Use best research-based practices for implementing these educational activities, with the associated assessment and feedback, in a variety of classroom settings and course levels.
