The Stanford Center for Professional Development, a part of the Office of the Vice Provost for Technology & Learning, has published a guide to support faculty and instructors in moving their course delivery online. Stanford Online Course Creation Essentials provides instructors with step-by-step guidance on planning, developing, and delivering their online courses.

Recognizing that instructors are currently inundated with advice about online teaching, the guide offers a framework for them to organize their thoughts and move through a series of key considerations. It features a handy “Quick-Start Checklist” and discussion around common questions such as:

  • What can I expect when moving my course online?
  • What does effective online learning look like?
  • How do I make online learning work for my students?
  • How do I develop my online course?

The guide, while written expressly for Stanford faculty and instructors, is available to all as an accessible PDF: Stanford Online Course Creation Essentials (download)

While SCPD hopes this guide will be useful for instructors looking to make sense of all the resources available to them through sites like Stanford Teach Anywhere, they also recognize that this is a stressful time for faculty and instructors.

“The most important thing when delivering your online course is to just be yourself and be committed to supporting your students during this difficult time. Don’t feel like you have to do everything!” says Laura House, Director of Instructional Design at SCPD. “Bring your students along on the journey with you. If you make a mistake, your students will forgive you. We are in unusual times, and we are all learning together.”
