Computers and Software Available

VPTL Learning Environments provides computers for use by Stanford students, faculty, and staff members.


These computers are located in a variety of central locations as well as all residences. The central locations include the following:

Computer Types, Operating Systems, and Software

We have two types of desktop machines: general purpose iMacs that can run either Mac OS or Windows OS and Mac Pros for media production. We also have a small number of MacBooks available to be checked out at the Tech Desk.

A full-service SUNet ID is required to use computers managed by the VPTL Learning Environments group.

Stanford Collaboration and Storage Options

There are several options for collaboration with classmates and storing documents and data for classwork:
  • Personal Stanford AFS space — 5GB per user
  • Box —  25 GB of cloud storage
  • Microsoft OneDrive (faculty, staff, graduate students) — 5 TB per user
  • Google Drive and Google Docs — unlimited free storage space
